Department of Defence Neurofibromatosis Postdoctoral Traineeship

The intent of the Neurofibromatosis Research Program Postdoctoral Traineeship Award is to enable recent medical or other doctoral degree graduates to obtain the necessary experience to pursue an independent career in Neurofibromatosis (NF) research. The areas of research listed below are the focus of current Reeve Foundation emphasis and funding:

FUNDING PRIORITIES

Studying strategies that may promote neuronal growth and survival, encourage the formation of synapses, enhance the production of myelin, restore conduction capabilities, or may otherwise lead to restoration of the compromised circuitry in the acutely and chronically injured spinal cord.
Evaluating the efficacy of drugs or other interventions that protect against secondary neuronal injury or provide insight into the mechanisms causing such damage.
Defining anatomical characteristics of spinal cord injury in well-defined animal models and in the human spinal cord, specifically documenting the neuronal systems that are most vulnerable to spinal cord injury and the functional losses occurring as a result.
Elucidating the biological mechanisms underlying approaches to improve concomitant functions affected by spinal cord injury, (e.g., bladder function, sexual function) and alleviate chronic pain and spasticity. The development of treatments for chronic injury is a high priority for the organization; however, funding will also be provided for studies more relevant to the acute phase of injury.

Basic research will be supported if it has clear potential to accelerate progress at the applied end of the continuum and/or if it reflects a research "change of direction." More at http://www.ChristopherReeve.org/

NSF Fellowships for Transformative Computational Science using CyberInfrastructure

The program supports recently graduated scientists and engineers who are interested in pursuing postdoctoral activities in computational science, and thereby nurturing the future leaders in this emerging and important multidisciplinary field. Computational research and education activities that are cyberinfrastrucure-based and cross disciplinary boundaries are a key focus of this program.

EAR Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships (EAR-PF)

The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) awards Postdoctoral Fellowships to highly qualified investigators within 3 years of obtaining their PhD to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. The research and education plans of each fellowship must address scientific questions within the scope of EAR disciplines. The program is intended to recognize beginning investigators of significant potential, and provide them with experience in research and education that will establish them in leadership positions in the Earth Sciences community.

SBE Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Follow-up Research Starter Grants (MPRF)

The Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) offers Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Research Starter Grants in an effort to increase the diversity of researchers who participate in NSF programs in the social, behavioral and economic sciences and thereby increase the participation of scientists from underrepresented groups in selected areas of science in the United States. These activities (postdoctoral fellowships and follow-up research starter grants) support training and research in the areas of social, behavioral and economic sciences within the purview of NSF.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Humboldt Research Awards

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards annually to foreign scientists and scholars with internationally recognized academic qualifications. The research award honors the academic achievements of the award winner's lifetime. Furthermore, award winners are invited to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany in cooperation with colleagues for periods of between six months and one year. The award can amount to a maximum of 75,000 EUR ($101,000).

INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship

The INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship combines postdoctoral research training in the United States with professional development activities and grant-writing guidance to form a unique program for drug abuse scientists. Fellows may conduct their research in any aspect of the biomedical or behavioral science of drug abuse and addiction. Previous fellows have conducted research in all aspects of drug abuse and addiction, from social science to basic science, including epidemiology, prevention, treatment, and preclinical and clinical sciences. Fellows and their mentors are encouraged to develop jointly and seek funding for a collaborative research project to be conducted in the fellow's home country. Fellows and their U.S. mentors are part of a network of international scientists who exchange information and collaborate on drug abuse research nationally, regionally, and globally.

CEDAR, GEM, and SHINE Postdoctoral Research

The Coupling, Energetics, and Dynamics of Atmospheric Regions (CEDAR) program, the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) program, and the Solar, Heliosphere and INterplanetary Environment (SHINE) program are special programs within the Aeronomy, Magnetospheric Physics and Solar-Terrestrial Research programs in the Atmospheric Sciences Division of the Geosciences Directorate. These three programs each involve specific regions of the space environment and the way these regions interact. Each of the programs has its own Program Solicitation, but they also have a common commitment to support researchers who have recently received their Ph.D. degree, allowing them to request limited support for CEDAR/GEM/SHINE research activities of their own devising.
