Dr. Carole Bewley
Carole Bewley received her Ph.D. in 1995 in a joint program in chemistry and oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. She did postdoctoral work in protein NMR in the Laboratory of Chemical Physics, NIDDK, on a Cancer Research Institute fellowship and in 1999 joined the Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry, NIDDK, as a tenure-track investigator. She is currently a senior investigator and chief of the Section on Natural Products Chemistry.
Dr. Ward Smith
Dr. Ward Smith is an extramural program administrator and chief of the Structural Genomics and Proteomics Technology Branch in the Division of Cell Biology and Biophysics at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at NIH. His responsibilities include directing the Protein Structure Initiative, a network of research centers collaborating with biologists to address questions of structure and function and to make protein structure determination faster, easier, cheaper and more useful to a broad range of scientists. Prior to joining NIGMS, Smith was a protein crystallographer in the Biosciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory, where he helped to develop the General Medicine and Cancer (GM/CA) synchrotron beamlines for protein crystallography. Prior to that, he was an associate director in the department of structural biology at GlaxoSmithKline where he led a team of structural biologists focused on the structure of biological macromolecules and structure-based drug design.
