Did Watching Television Put Americans in Debt?
A new study conducted by researchers at Hunter College reveals that the role of advertising in household consumption and debt may be greater than suggested by existing research. Drs. Matthew Baker and Lisa George (Economics) analyzed the effect of television penetration on debt using household finance measures drawn from the annual Survey of Consumer Finances covering years 1946 to 1958. Their results indicate that the appearance of television was associated with higher levels of debt for durable goods. »
QC Scientists Map Hudson Contamination
Dr. Gregory O'Mullan (School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Queens College), has teamed up with John Lipscomb, a patrol boat operator of Riverkeeper, the state's largest clean water advocacy group, to map contamination points along the Hudson River and its tributaries. »
Federal Stimulus Funding Opportunities
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides many opportunities for obtaining new research resources. Our office will be happy to provide guidance to assist faculty in submitting proposals; modifying and re-submitting earlier proposals that may now be more favorably received; and requesting supplements to existing awards.
NYS Governor Paterson announces Innovative Economy Matching Grants
On June 8, 2009, Governor David Paterson announced the Innovative Economy Matching Grants as part of his New Economy plan. This program that will provide a 10% match for every stimulus dollar the federal government awards through competitive grants to research facilities in New York State.
New York will allocate $100 million over several years for this program which is expected to leverage one billion dollars in federal research funding. This program will help ensure that new research centers are built in New York which will position the state for future federal grants and private investment.
