SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda terrorists attack the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, murdering nearly 3,000 people. The attack also permanently damaged the Borough of Manhattan Community College/CUNY's Fiterman Hall, a 15-story building, reducing the College's instructional space by one third. A new Fiterman Hall is scheduled to open in 2012.
JULY 3, 2002 The Executive Order for Tribal Colleges and Universities is issued, fulfilling the 1994 land-grant status act.
2003 In Grutter v. Bollinger, the U.S. Supreme Court (5-4) upholds the University of Michigan Law School's affirmative action policy.
2004 Excelencia in Education is formed in Washington, D.C., to foster higher education success among Latino students.
APRIL 16, 2007 The Virginia Tech shootings take place; a student kills 32 others, then himself.
AUGUST 14, 2008 The Higher Education Act of 1965 is reauthorized.
FEBRUARY 10, 2009 Nancy Zimpher, former president of the University of Cincinnati, is named Chancellor of The State University of New York to oversee 64 campuses, ranging from community colleges to research universities. She is the first woman to hold the post.
APRIL 2009 Muriel Howard, former president of Buffalo State College/SUNY, is named president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the first female president of the organization and the first African-American to become president of any of the six higher education associations in Washington, D.C.
