SEEK Student of Note: Shantel Deleon

Baruch College SEEK Program, Fall 2014

ShantelDeleonShantel is currently pursuing a BBA in accounting, with a double minor in communications and political science at Baruch College.  As a High School student, she spent three years of her life as a graphic designer and public speaker. As a first generation college student, Shantel hopes to open doors for the following generation. In Shantel's exploration of the business world, she is still very committed to her community - serving the New York Urban League in raising scholarship funds for future students, working with political campaigns like Bill DeBlasio's, and launching programs like the Baruch College Now Student Ambassador Program.

Shantel is developing her leadership and interpersonal skills through pre-professional development opportunities and within her freshman year, she completed/participated in the following programs:

  • Future Diversity Leadership Program sponsored by KPMG
  • Deloitte's Next Generation Leadership Program
  • Goldman Sachs’ Undergraduate Summer Camp
  • NABA/KPMG National Case Study Competition
  • NABA NY 2014 scholarship recipient
  • Streetwise Partners Career Ventures Program at PwC

As Director of Communications of the National Association of Black Accountants for the Baruch chapter, Shantel is responsible for preparing and sending the weekly newsletter.  She is fellow at America Needs You and a participant in the Baruch Rising Sophomore Program.  Ms. Deleon was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society and in November 2014 will be inducted into the Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society.

According to Ms. Deleon, “The numerous opportunities devoted to developing myself professionally, and the exposure to professionals of various ages working in my intended industry has allowed me to gain insight and truly understand what I, too, can be capable of.   Attending the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) National Convention has really been one of my most rewarding experiences. Never before have I seen a plethora of opportunities sitting before me. My participation in the national convention has and will always allow me to stay ahead of the game and will forever be an integral part in my progressing career.”

“The SEEK Program and NABA at Baruch are not to be taken for granted.  My gratitude extends far beyond what words can ever express.  Both enable students to keep moving forward.”
