A Tale of Two Cities: ASAP Students Respond

In October, 2008, ASAP students, ASAP advisers, and the ASAP University Director attended a performance of the Broadway musical A Tale of Two Cities. Free tickets were provided to ASAP courtesy of Camp Broadway and the Weiner Nusim Foundation.  Here's what ASAP students had to say about the experience:

I must tell you, I loved A Tale of Two Cities. It was amazing; spectacular, terrific! I had been to the theater before, but nothing was like this play. I did not understand before seeing this play what was so great about Broadway shows. Now I know what a beautiful experience it is. The opportunity of going to a Broadway show was a transforming experience. I think ASAP is doing so many good things for us students. In my particular case, ASAP has changed my life forever. I have had so many opportunities to do great things. ASAP has given me the opportunity to not only get my associates degree, but also of becoming a better person. ASAP has helped not only in my academic formation, but also in the human aspect of my life. ASAP has taught me to be a more sensitive person. I would say to be an integral person. The opportunity to see A Tale of Two Cities is a good example. Not only do we have the academic support, but we also have the opportunity to enjoy arts events that enrich our lives.

I would love to comment on this beautiful experience. I went once to a Broadway show when I was very young. Since then I hadn't had the chance to go again. The tickets were too expensive. Having the opportunity to see A Tale of Two Cities was so exciting for me. As soon as I got to the theater itself I felt I was in a place out of a storybook. Once the show started it captivated me from the very beginning to the very end. The story alone was as if you were living it in that moment. It was very relatable to one's life and the music added a heavenly touch. It was such a great experience for me. It opened my eyes and made me want to explore the world of theater more.  The most that I can say is thank you so much for the opportunity to enjoy such a pleasant and memorable show.

Maira Rendon, Hostos Community College
I really enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities. It was spectacular. The baroque theatre was beautiful. The acting and singing was really great and I loved the sound effects. They made the events of the play seem real. I would really love to go see more plays if possible. Thank you for this great experience.

I would like to say thank you for the tickets that we received for A Tale of Two Cities. It is a wonderful production! I enjoyed the show so much. The story, actors, singing, staging, and music were all awesome. My friends and I had a wonderful experience seeing this show. I am very appreciative to ASAP for offering us the tickets to see this wonderful show. I loved attending with my friends and discussing it afterwards.

Broadway shows are a unique experience that I very much enjoy. Seeing A Tale of Two Cities was a truly enriching experience that I learned from. It was fantastic. I've never seen anything like it. I was inspired by the story and hope we have the chance to possibly to attend more shows. Thank you for this opportunity.

I just wanted to say thank you on giving us the opportunity to see A Tale of Two Cities. I have always been interested in Broadway shows, considering I've been to going to them anytime I get a chance to and can afford it. I had seen the movie version and read the book, but the musical really sparked imagination! It was wonderful! I enjoyed the drama, the plot, the misery, and the love. Thank you ASAP and our sponsor again and again!

A Tale of Two Cities was my first Broadway show. I totally enjoyed it. It was very interesting, well directed, the set was great, and the actors and actresses were totally amazing. The two main characters that captured my attention were Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. They were linked so closely together yet they barely knew each other. Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton may appear similar in appearance, they might love the same woman, yet they are both very unique characters. The play showed how you can sacrifice your life for the one you love. I enjoyed this play and would love to have the opportunity to see another.
