ASAP Transfer Scholarship Program
Thanks to support from The Leona M. and Harry B. Hemsley Charitable Trust a scholarship fund established in fall 2009 will continue to support students through spring 2013.
In fall 2012, the Sidney and Laura Gilbert Scholarship Fund was established to support ASAP's best and brightest graduates in the next phase of their education journeys.
The ASAP Transfer Scholarship Program rewards high-achieving two-year graduates of CUNY's Accelerated Study in Associate Programs who matriculate into baccalaureate programs at select CUNY senior colleges: Baruch College, Brooklyn College, Hunter College, Queens College, City College, and Lehman College.
About the ASAP Transfer Scholarship Program
The scholarship provides a monetary award for up to four semesters to allow students to complete a Bachelor's degree. Recipients also receive targeted advisement support during their baccalaureate study. Scholars are selected based on strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 GPA), completion of an associate degree, and demonstrated financial need.
ASAP's Transfer Scholars
According to Bronx Community College ASAP graduate and ASAP Transfer Scholar Jose Rosa, "College is a commitment and an investment in your future. I had made the conscious decision that once I started, I was going to finish to the best of my ability ... With the help of all the ASAP staff I achieved my goal and head[ed] to Lehman college as the recipient of the ASAP transfer scholarship, and I am now pursuing my last semester at Lehman and will be graduating this June, hopefully as an honors student again."
Annual ASAP Transfer Scholar Reception
ASAP Transfer Scholars are honored each fall at special receptions, which include friends, family, ASAP staff, CUNY leadership, and funders. The receptions for Fall 2011 and fall 2009 scholars were held at the CUNY Graduate Center, and the reception for fall 2010 scholars was held at Borough of Manhattan Community College. On September 11, 2012, recipients of this year’s Sidney and Laura Gilbert Achievement Awards and continuing Transfer Scholars gathered on at the Macaulay Honors College.
The Sidney and Laura Gilbert Scholarship Fund
Sidney (1912 – 2000) and Laura (1917 – 2009) grew up in New York City in low-income, single parent, immigrant families. Both were compelled to begin working at a young age, ending their formal education before they could begin high school. Married in 1941, they settled after World War II in California, where they prospered in a variety of business ventures. The Gilberts established the scholarship fund so that others could have the opportunity for education they were denied.
