SPRING 2012
Queensborough ASAP Students Elected to Student Government: ASAP student Preston Baker ('13) was elected President of the Queensborough Student Government, ASAP student Jace Dunn ('14) was elected Executive Vice President, and ASAP stduent Ashley Persaud ('13) was elected Programming Vice President.
ASAP Students Chosen to Participate in 2012 Salzburg Global Seminar: Michelle Borg (Queensborough '12), Almarie Guy (Bronx '12), and Donnee Johnson (Bronx '12) have been chosen to participate in the Salzburg Global Seminar in April 2012. They will travel to Austria, to participate in the intensive week-long seminar, which allows students to explore social, political, and economic issues from a global perspective. Bronx ASAP Students Study Abroad: In January, Miguel Mendez ('12) and Rafael Coste ('12) studied in Japan, and Brisida Mema ('12) studied in China.
FALL 2011
ASAP Students Receive Scholarships: Asana Gimballa (Bronx '12) received a Coca-Cola Scholarship; Francine Francis (Bronx '13) received a Lang Scholarship from the American Museum of Natural History; Patrich Watkins (LaGuardia '12) received an America Rising Scholarship Fund award.
LaGuardia ASAP Student Travels to Arizona for Conference: Rafael Tejada ('12), a delegate for the Honor Students Advisory Committee (HSAC) attended the annual National Collegiate Honors Council Conference (NCHC), which was held in Phoenix Arizona in October. Click here for more information >>
Hostos ASAP Student's Busy Semester: Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member Amabell Rodriguez '12 participated in the Carnegie Hall Cultural Exchange, was awarded a Botanical Garden Research Fellowship, and participated in the Emerging Leaders Conference at Harvard University; her photography was also featured at a Hostos exhibition in November.
ASAP Students Become Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Members: Hostos' Octrisha Parker '12, Pearl Doghor, '12, Avery Toledo '12, Emerlin Ortega '13, and Jemair Lewis '13 became members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
ASAP Student Chosen as "Civic Leaders of Tomorrow" Fellow: Queensborough Community College freshman Liang Lin was named a 2011 fellow by the "Civic Leaders of Tomororow" Public Policy and Advocacy Program. In addition to a stipend, fellows "participate in educational and leadership development programs, services and activities that promote professional growth, including both field work and seminars that will help them synthesize their experience in the field with policy and advocacy theory and strategy." ASAP Students Complete Internships: Andre Morgan (Hostos fall '11) began an internship at the CUNY Institute for Health Equity; Yani Rivas (LaGuardia '12) was an intern at MetLife.

Queensborough ASAP student Spends Summer at Yale: Muhammad Khalil ('13) participated in the 2011 Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at Yale University.
ASAP Students Complete Internships: Jamel James (Kingsborough summer '11) was selected as an intern for LIFT: Justice for All Family Legal Services; Hiba Elyass (Kingsborough '12) was an intern at ABC's The View; Karolyn Jimenez (Bronx fall '11) completed a Geospatial Data internship; Michaelangelo Moulton Jr. (Hostos '11) completed a digital design internship.
LaGuardia Community College ASAP Student Participates in Urban Studies Symposium: Laura Hoffman ('12) participated in "Envisioning Newtown Creek: Past, Present & Future," an urban studies symposium organized by Professor Steve Lang. Read Laura's blog entry about the experience >>
Hostos ASAP Students Win Awards: Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member and Model UN participant Gretcher Hernandez ('12) was awarded an El Desfile Dominicano del Bronx scholarship. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member and Hostos salutatorian Juliana Matos (summer '11) won a Scholastic Achievement Award and an English Speaking Union (ESU) award. Rondell Charles ('12) received a William T. Morris Foundation scholarship, and Ouma Sanoussi (summer '11) received a Carlos & Edward Gonzalez Award. Model UN participant Manuel Mercedes ('12) received a CUNY Bronx Scholarship Fund award. Katherine Feliz (summer '11) and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member Sinai Cuahutenco both received Scholastic Achievement Awards, and Sinai also received an English Department gold medal. Nicole Campudoni ('11) received an Ernesto Malave Scholarship, awarded by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee.
Kingsborough ASAP Student Receives Award from the Women's Forum: Lai Kam (Shirley) Chua, '11, received an Education Award from the Women's Forum, a network of women leaders from New York that aims "to take an active, leadership role in matters of importance to them." BMCC ASAP Students Receive Soroptomist Awards: Elsa Garcia and Kathleen Daniel, both BMCC '11, received awards from Soroptomist, an international organization for business and professional women. Click here for more information >>
ASAP Students Chosen as New York Needs You (NYNY) Fellows: Brisida Mema (Bronx '12), Miguel Mendez (Bronx '13), Iman Stevenson (Kingsborough '12), Chi Choi (Kingsborough Fall '11), Lauren Hynd (Queensborough '13), Kenny Ayala (Queensborough '12), and Andre Morgan (Hostos fall '11) were awarded with highly competitive fellowships from NYNY, which aims to "prepare ... first-generation college students to realize their college and career potential." Fellows are paired with mentors to guide them through their two-year fellowship. Click here for more information >>
ASAP Students Receive CUNY Awards: Elsa Garcia (BMCC '11) received the college's 2011 McGraw Hill Scholarship for excellence in accounting. Loukman Lamany (Bronx '11) received an honoroable mention for CUNY's Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Karolyn Jimenez (Bronx '12) received an award for excellence in an environmental science project.
ASAP Students Attend Albany Conference: Bronx ASAP students Rosswill Lyons '13 and Joel Cabrera '12 attended the Somos El Futuro Conference in April, as did Hostos ASAP student Enoch Sowah '12. The organization seeks to increase Puerto Rican / Hispanic participation in public policy. Rosswill was also chosen for a CUNY Somos internship.
ASAP Students Study Abroad: Wilfredo Bermudez (Bronx '12) and Anival Gonzalez (BMCC '12) participated in study abroad programs in Italy, and Mayra Guerrero (BMCC '11) participated in a study abroad program in Spain. Hostos students Manuel Mercedes ('12), Model UN participant Shpresim Haxhaj ('12), Wen Feng Wu (fall '11), Amabell Rodriguez ('12), Mayra Marte ('12), Judy Benitez (’12), and Wilson Gell ('12) all received summer 2011 study abroad awards to study in the Dominican Republic.
Hostos ASAP Student Chosen as Kaplan Scholar: Phi Theta Kappa member and Model UN participant Enoch Sowah was chosen to be part of The Kaplan Leadership Program, which provides benefits including scholarships, mentoring, advisement, and cultural enrichment opportunities.
