2011 Leadership Team Projects
Borough of Manhattan Community College
ASAP Action and Awareness Project
On Friday, May 27 the 2011 BMCC ASAP Leadership Program team held a talent show as a part of its 2011 project, “ASAP Action and Awareness Project.” At the talent show the team collected donations including canned goods, clothing, books, and monetary contributions. Bronx Community College Green Festival
The 2011 Bronx ASAP Leadership Program team organized a “Green Festival," which aimed to “support health and wellness” on the BCC campus and “educate the public about sustainability” with regard to food. The day included a tree planting to commemorate the outgoing president of BCC; a “Race for Health”; a community panel; music; refreshments; and cooking demonstrations. Click here to learn more >>
Hostos Community College
Our Voices, Our Talents, Our Stories
The 2011 Hostos ASAP Leadership team organized a number of ASAP students and a talented mural artist Carlos Mateu to help in the process of creating a canvas that represents how students feel about Hostos. They planned a set of brainstorming sessions with fellow ASAP students to identify the theme of the canvas, and also planned a set of painting workshops to get their peers involved with the actual process of creating this piece of art. Finally they organized an unveiling event to expose the wonderful piece of art to the college community. The event included performances by ASAP students, who shared their talents with the community. The 2011 Kingsborough ASAP Leadership Program team planned a multicultural festival to benefit Project Reach Youth. The celebration showcased ASAP students modeling, singing, dancing, reciting poetry, and showcasing items from their native countries. The Make It Happen Rising Stars Talent Show
On April 28, the 2011 LaGuardia Community College Leadership Program team held “The Make It Happen Rising Stars Talent Show,” which included comedy, poetry, dance, and musical performances, among other things. The show reflected the slogan for the team’s 2011 project, “Invest to Success,” which refers to the importance of investing time and energy to one’s academic career, as well as the communal value of individuals’ commitment. Queensborough Community College
On May 16 Queensborough's 2011 ASAP Leadership Program team held “The Big Red Event,” a fashion show designed to raise AIDS awareness and support HIV prevention. The fashion show featured QCC students and friends wearing clothing in various shades of red. It also featured speakers including family and friends of individuals with HIV/AIDS, as well as a HIV-positive individual. Money was raised for Bailey House, an organization that provides housing and support services to homeless New Yorkers who are living with HIV/AIDS. Click here to learn more >>
