ASAP End of the Year Celebration and Talent Showcase

KBCC

Project Description

The 2010 KCC ASAP Leadership Team set out to plan an end-of-the-year celebration and talent showcase to honor ASAP graduates and continuing students, as well as highlight the diversity and talents of the students in the program.  They also worked with Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees to collaborate on a fundraiser for earthquake victims in Haiti.  ASAP students were asked to bring select items to donate in order to gain entry to the event.  Guests who donated three or more items received a custom-designed ASAP t-shirt.

How did you decide on this project, and what do you hope to achieve?

Melissa: A talent show was a given because we new there was talent in ASAP and that our peers would be excited to participate.  We wanted to get students involved as sometimes they don’t come to events.  Most importantly we wanted to raise awareness for the victims of the earth quake in Haiti.

How would you describe your experience?

Melissa:  The experience was great.  I felt good that I took leadership over certain activities and my excitement motivated other team members.

What have you learned through planning this project together?

Melissa:  I learned to be patient.  If you don’t have patience, you’re going to get hot headed.  It’s also important to get things done as soon as possible.  You have to think ahead and be prepared.

Do you have any advice to give to future ASAP Leadership participants?

Melissa: Make sure to compromise in situations and get comfortable with humbling yourself.
