2013 BMCC ASAP Leadership Team Member
My name is Lydia Amoa-Owusu. I am 18 years old. I attend Borough of Manhattan Community College and am majoring in Business Administration.
When I was in high school, I knew my capabilities, but I was not able to reach my potential because I began to cut class and follow friends who were not the best role models for me. Living with just my mother, who I only saw three times a week, took a toll on me. She worked hard to pay the bills and that meant I had to learn how to be independent. I had no support system, no one to help me with my work, no one to talk to about my problems at school. I felt helpless. I felt alone. The last thing on my mind was college—let alone dealing with the course load. But I knew that in order to create a better future for my children and myself, I had to attend and succeed in college. Even though ASAP benefits you financially with a monthly MetroCard, a tuition waiver, smaller classes, and free textbooks, my advisor Nadine has been my God-sent angel.
Even though Nadine is my academic advisor, she is also my mentor. Having someone to talk to and someone to answer your questions immediately is a relief. She makes sure that I register for classes in the correct order and that I complete all my application requirements in a timely manner. Having an advisor to push me beyond my limits and encourage me to work hard is my motivation. Not only does she encourage me, she helps me to prep for my future and helps me plan ahead. With her help, I will have completed my associate’s degree in a year and a half.
Without ASAP, I don’t know where I would be. Actually I do. I would probably be at a dead end job working because I would not have been able to pay for school. By the end of Spring 2014, I should be attending my new four-year college, majoring in business administration with a focus in marketing and a minor in mathematics. I just want future students to know that it does not matter where you start, it matters where you finish—and you can finish faster and stronger with ASAP.
