Lavie Margolin

Career and Employment Specialist,

La Guardia Community College ASAP

When did you join ASAP?

I just passed my one year anniversary as I joined LaGuardia in July of 2010.

What does your job entail on a daily basis?

I provide career, employment, and professional support to ASAP students, and advise them regarding academic majors as they relate to career choices. I develop and present workshops and seminars to students as part of the ASAP Leadership seminar; I coordinate LaGuardia’s participation in the CUNY Central Leadership program. I also inform students of scholarship opportunities, develop career assessment plans, and provide students with effective and timely career and employment referral to both internal and external support services.

What has been the most rewarding thing about working at ASAP?

Being able to see students transform into master students and go on to further success.

What, in your opinion, makes ASAP unique?

The collaborative nature of the staff towards student achievement.

Why do you think ASAP is important?

Given its demonstrated success, ASAP is a potential game changer for more positive outcomes for community colleges.

How has working at ASAP impacted you?

ASAP has allowed me to see deeper into the potential each person possesses, even when it is hidden.

What is one of the most memorable moments you’ve had while working at ASAP?

Every day brings different anecdotes to report. One example: I led workshops on salary negotiation and interviewing strategy. A few weeks later, one student reported that he used my techniques and was able to find a better job and increase his previous salary through negotiation. He will now be able to work less and concentrate on his studies.
