About CUNY Start
W hat is CUNY Start?
CUNY Start is a college transition program that provides intensive coursework in reading/writing, math, and college success. The program enrolls students who have been accepted to CUNY and need foundational academic skills development before beginning credit courses. Students who enroll in CUNY Start attend for an academic semester and are able to re-take the required CUNY Assessment Tests up to two times.
Why CUNY Start?
CUNY Start offers intensive instruction and advisement on either a full-time (25 hours per week) or part-time (12 hours per week) basis. Students pay only $75 for a semester of CUNY Start, which includes textbooks. At CUNY Start, students do not use their limited financial aid, enabling them to save it for their credit courses. Individuals who complete the program are significantly better prepared for college-level coursework. Past students have shown significant gains when they re-take the CUNY Assessment Tests, and many have been exempted from remedial coursework entirely.
What is the CUNY Start approach?
