The Teacher Academy's aim is to work with students like you - students who love science and mathematics and who want to make a difference. Great teachers have a passion for their subjects. Great teachers also study with exceptional teachers - observing, understanding how students learn, and finally working with mentors who guide them. This is the basis of The Teacher Academy, where students spend four years becoming mathematicians and scientists, learning how to bring to their own students the same satisfaction they have gained in unlocking the wonders of these fields.
What is different about The Teacher Academy? Doesn't The City University of New York have teacher education programs in science education? In mathematics education? Certainly. In The Teacher Academy, however, it is definitely not "business as usual." Teacher Academy students begin working in host schools in their first year. Teacher Academy students work within a community to understand what makes great teaching and what motivates students. They see what is happening in the schools - how students respond to teachers, how teachers assess students, how students change over time. In addition, Teacher Academy students are challenged to master their major field - whether mathematics, biology, chemistry, or earth science. Through an excellent liberal arts and sciences program, Teacher Academy students are deeply educated to bring out the best in themselves and their future students.
