The race is on. By the end of the decade the Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative aims to make the cost of solar energy competitive with traditional fossil-fuel based sources. The NYC Solar America City Partnership has emerged as a leader in structuring the transformation to the clean renewable energy of solar through the launch of the NYC Solar Map and the implementation of a strategic solar roadmap that resulted in a eight-fold increase in solar power production. The Partnership, led by Sustainable CUNY, is comprised of the City University of New York, the NYC Mayor's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability and the NYC Economic Development Corporation, with considerable collaboration from Con Edison. The Partnership is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and NYSERDA.
Solar Market Analytics, Roadmapping, and Tracking NY
At the 2012 NYC Solar Summit, CUNY will unveil ‘Solar Market Analytics, Roadmapping, and Tracking NY’ (SMART NY) a plan supported by thirty City and State organizations. As the price of solar panels and inverters continue to drop, it is the balance of system (BOS) costs that have become one of the most important challenges that remain to be addressed. SMART NY recently won a DOE Rooftop Challenge award for its plan to drive down the costs for installing solar in this City of a million rooftops.
The Summit will kick off with the launch of an Intelligent IT platform for solar. Panel discussions will include topics such as permitting, financing, and interconnection as well as the latest in technology, manufacturing and storage. In addition, CUNY will present a strategy to transition the NYC Solar Map to a NYC Energy Map that will add in new features such as solar thermal data and marketing components.
