Event Summary: October 2012 - November 2012
DACA Event at Brooklyn College
Brooklyn College welcomed us for a Deferred Action Application Assistance Event hosted by the Legal Aid Society and Citizenship Now! on October 22nd, 2012. At this event, which was our last Deferred Action event in Brooklyn, we helped 31 participants both CUNY students and not.
Our last Deferred Action event took place at John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Friday, October, 26th, 2012. The staff of CUNY Citizenship Now! served 61 participants determining whether they qualified for Deferred Action and helped those who qualified complete their application. This event brought the final number of CUNY Dreamers assisted at events to 578.
Citizenship Application Assistance Event with MOIA
On October 27th, 2012 we held the first of a series of Citizenship Events organized in conjunction with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, part of NYCitizenship In Schools <pdf>, an initiative of the Mayor's Office. This event was held at Morris Educational Campus in the Bronx. With the assistance of volunteers, and several staff from MOIA and Citizenship Now! we helped 28 participants apply for citizenship. We also referred 8 participants to our immigration centers for more assistance with their cases.
Haitian TPS Application Assistance Event with the Legal Aid Society
In a superb display of dedication, 95 Citizenship Now! volunteers turned up to lend a helping hand to the Haitian community during our TPS Application Assistance Event on Saturday, November 10, an event that was originally scheduled for November 3. Our volunteers, many of them affected by the storm Sandy, came to the event despite the various difficulties our city is going through, and responded to our last minute call for help. They understood that Haitians had a deadline to reapply for TPS and that we couldn't postpone giving them the help they needed. We thank you for your enthusiasm to help others.
At the event we assisted 139 participants apply for TPS and referred another 6 participants to one of our immigration centers. The event was co-sponsored by the Legal Aid Society, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), Assembly Members Rhoda Jacobs and Karim Camara, and Council Members Jumaane Williams and Mathieu Eugene.
CUNY Citizenship Now! thanks all our volunteers for the invaluable help they have provided to their New York City neighbors.
