Event Summary:  December 2012

Citizenship Application Assistance Event at Queens Center Mall
On December 6th, 35 volunteers supported our event held at the Queens Center Mall. This event was developed in partnership with Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and Council Member Daniel Dromm. We saw 49 applicants, out of which 38 were eligible for citizenship. Nine people were either ineligible to apply or referred to a CUNY center. Two participants were elated to find out that they were already U.S. citizens and were given information on how to apply for their U.S. passports.

Citizenship Application Assistance Event with MOIA
On December 8th, 2012 we held the second Citizenship Event organized in conjunction with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, as part of NYCitizenship in Schools <pdf>, an initiative of the Mayor's Office.  This was the first of two MOIA events in December and it was held at Gregorio Luperon High School in Washington Heights, Manhattan.  With the assistance of 45 volunteers, and several staff from MOIA and Citizenship Now! we helped 35 participants apply for citizenship and helped one participant determine she was already a U.S. citizen.  We referred 4 participants to our immigration centers for more assistance with their cases and 3 others were told to return to one of our centers in a couple of months because they did not yet qualify for citizenship.

On December 15th, 2012 we held our third and final NYCitizenship in Schools event of 2012.  This event was held at Newcomers High School in Queens. With the assistance of 63 volunteers we helped 78 participants apply for citizenship.  We also referred 15 participants to our immigration centers for more assistance with their cases.  This brought our final number of participants assisted in 2012 to an outstanding 1,985.  Our next event, part of this important initiative, is scheduled for January 26, 2013.
