Electronic Registration Now Available for Volunteer Citizenship Corps

August 20, 2008

Becoming a NYC/CUNY Citizenship Corps volunteer is now easier. You now need only to fill out the registration form to be part of a group that provides free naturalization application assistance at Citizenship Now! events held throughout New York City. The Corps, an initiative of the CUNY Citizenship and Immigration Project, is open to all interested individuals, among them attorneys, paralegals, law students and immigrant service providers.

The Corps plays an integral role in the Project's helping over 6000 immigrants each year. Benefits of Corps membership include access to select training opportunities. Seminars and trainings on naturalization are taught by experts from within the faculty and staff of the City University of New York. In addition, by participating in the NYC/CUNY Citizenship Corps, you will make a contribution to society and empower New York City's immigrant communities.

Vivienne Mclean, who has volunteered with the Corps for over two years, says "For me, personally, the Corps has been a life changing experience." She explained that nothing has satisfied her more than clients who have kept in touch with her after they received naturalization application assistance. When these individuals come back to her and recount how their entire family is now in the United States, she knows that the help she gave that one person "had a domino effect." Vivienne went on to express the value of volunteering in the community, stating that "Ideally you get up on Saturday morning and you give something back."

New and long time volunteers will be able to join us this coming month at three Citizenship Now! events, one with Council Member Stewart in Brooklyn on September 6, another with Congressman Meeks in Queens on September 13, and lastly with Council Member Addabo in Queens on September 28. Once registered for the Corps, you will receive invitations to these events.

If you would like to volunteer with the Corps, please visit the registration page. For more information about the Corps, contact our Special Project's unit at (212) 568-4679.

The NYC/CUNY Citizenship Corps is an initiative of the CUNY Citizenship and Immigration Project in conjunction with the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigration Affairs and the Department of Youth and Community Development.
