Bronx Community College was founded in 1957 to meet the growing need for access to higher education in the borough of the Bronx. It was one of the original undergraduate colleges that joined together in 1961 to create The City University of New York.

Over the past decade, the College has extended its outreach to New York City's economic, educational, and cultural institutions through partnerships with business and industry. Bronx Community College has also developed collaborative programs with pre-college institutions, enabling it to offer more and better services.

• Students can choose from a wide range of associate degree and certificate programs. Programs in the health professions and technology are particularly popular. Programs unique to Bronx Community College include nuclear medicine, ornamental horticulture, and environmental technology.
• Students can choose day or evening programs. Many courses are also offered on Saturdays and Sundays.
• The College's 200 full-time faculty members provide expert instruction.
• Students can supplement classroom instruction with tutoring and courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) as needed.
• The College has a nationally recognized Learning Resources Center on campus. It includes the Academic Computing Center and the Personal and Academic Support Services Center (PASS).
• Experienced faculty advisors and a professional counseling staff help students select the programs best suited to their needs and goals. Advisors also provide guidance regarding finances, making sound career decisions, and coping with personal needs.
• Since a large number of BCC students work as well as have children, the College offers a wide range of support services, including licensed day care for the pre-school children of enrolled students. An after-school education and recreation program for school-age youth is also available.
• Extracurricular activities are an integral part of many BCC students' educational experience. The College offers a complete spectrum of organizations, clubs, activities, and athletic teams.
• On-campus recreation facilities include an Olympic-size pool and a recently renovated student center.
• Liberal arts and sciences transfer students choosing the Associate in Science (AS) degree can select an option in biology, chemistry, or physics. This program ensures that students earning an AS degree can transfer all credits to a four-year institution.

Liberal Arts and Sciences

This is the choice for students planning to transfer to a senior college to complete a bachelor's degree. Students planning to obtain a bachelor's degree in such fields as communications, fine arts, social science, etc., should select Liberal Arts-AA degree. Students interested in transferring into baccalaureate programs in computer science, engineering science, or business administration should select appropriate curricula leading to an AS degree. Liberal arts and sciences are offered at every community college in CUNY.
