About Start-Up

START-UP NY is Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s ground-breaking initiative, approved by the New York State Legislature, to attract new high-tech businesses across the state by creating tax-free zones on select college campuses.

The City University of New York (CUNY), along with the State University of New York (SUNY), serves as the framework of the START-UP NY program. However, other independent universities/colleges may be eligible to develop tax-free communities.

Under the program, businesses will partner with universities, and both entities reap benefits. Businesses will operate tax-free for 10 years. They also gain access to world-class higher education institutions, including industry experts and advanced research laboratories.

Universities and colleges become tax-free communities that provide their students and teachers access to real-world, cutting edge business experiences.

Why CUNY?

The City University of New York is the nation’s leading public urban university, educating more than 269,000 students at 24 campuses throughout New York City.

By partnering with CUNY, your business gains these benefits:

  • Association with CUNY’s prestigious faculty of renowned experts in nearly every academic field
  • Access to top academic achieving CUNY students for internships or employment
  • Chance to be part of a thriving startup and high tech community
  • Proximity to and convenience of an extensive transportation system
  • Opportunity to secure public and private financial capital
  • And of course, being tax-free for ten years in the world’s greatest city!
