21st Century Buildings

CUNY is a major regional economic engine, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars a year in construction, facilities renovation and critical maintenance projects. In the past decade, the University's capital construction program has:

  • Completed more than $1.8 billion in projects at individual campuses;
  • Begun construction on $2.2 billion worth of projects; and
  • Created plans and designs for about $2.1 billion in new projects.

In fiscal year 2009-10 CUNY spent $560 million on capital projects. Collectively, these projects will generate approximately 14,000 jobs over the lifetime of the projects. The major new facilities now under construction include about 1.9 million square feet of space and are expected to open between 2010 and 2013. About half of them are dedicated to science, in support of the Chancellor’s Decade of Sciences initiative.

The innovative Critical Maintenance Program--created to assure that CUNY campuses are well maintained and meet health, safety, security and facilities preservation and code standards--has initiated more than $340 million in capital projects in the past two years.

And physical master plan updates have been initiated or completed for Baruch College, Brooklyn College, City College, College of Staten Island, Hostos Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Lehman College, Queens College and York College.
